Chava Kandel’s volunteering story is truly amazing. Originally from the United States, Chava was looking for a meaningful volunteering opportunity after she moved to Israel. It was clear from the beginning that Chava and Sara’s connection is going to be special. Read on about Chava’s inspiring experience:
My name is Chava Kandel and I am originally from Scranton, Pennsylvania, now living in Givat Shmuel, Israel. I have a bachelor's degree in psychology and I work in hi-tech. Although, I love my work in hi-tech, it was important to me to find time to volunteer in order to meet new people, gain new experiences and give back. I reached out to Ruach Tova and was matched with an elderly woman at a place called Givat Hashlosha Geriatric Center.
The first day I went to meet Sara, we both felt an instant connection and we decided I would come weekly. I visited with Sara every week for almost a year before she passed away. I can't begin to describe how special these meetings became to me. Each week I looked forward to Wednesdays to visit Sara. Her infectious smile always greeted me as I walked through the door. We talked about everything, from our weeks, to our pasts, to our families. (She was the first person I told that I was pregnant!). She introduced me to her family and I introduced her to mine. She taught me Yiddish and I told her all our baby name options.
The last conversation I had with Sara I remember almost word for word. I called her from the hospital to tell her I had my baby girl. I could practically hear her smiling through the phone. She couldn't have been more happy for me! That is the type of person Sara was: loving. She truly became like family to me and I to her. We shared a special bond that I will never forget. I owe a great deal of thanks to Ruach Tova for allowing me to meet such a wonderful woman.
